Becca (Nicole Kidman) and Howie Corbett (Aaron Ekhart) grieve over the death of their son. He was killed in a car accident when he was 4 years old. They mourn differently. Becca wants to remove all reminders of their son whereas Howie wants to hang on them. Howie also wants to have another child, but she rejects the idea.

Nat (Dianne Wiest), Becca's mother, compares herself with Becca because she also lost her son. However, her son was 30 years old and died from a drug overdose and Becca states their respective situations are incomparable. Eventually she understands their grief is the same.
Becca and Howie go to a support group, but Becca gets annoyed by some members. So Howie goes to the meetings alone, and almost has an affair with fellow member Gabby (Sandra Oh).
Meanwhile, Becca starts meeting Jason, the teenage boy who drove the car that hit her son. She finds out he feels guilty and tells him he is not to blame for the accident. Jason shows her the comic book he is writing about parallel universes, Rabbit Hole. She likes it and says it is wonderful. Howie resents Becca's meetings with Jason.
Finally, Howie and Becca start accepting their son's death. They organize a garden lunch and the last shot of the film is Becca and Howie holding hands, sitting in their garden, after the guests have left.

It's a very human story about a couple going through the ordeal of having lost their son and how to come to terms with that.
