Two boys are left at a convent by their mother, who is widowed and unable to take care of them. The plot focuses on one boy because he is an especially hard worker, but life is rough for him in poverty-stricken Italy. In time he is forced to move to America, where he finds solace in the Italian immigrant community, and reconnects with a girl he grew up less than a mile away from. He discovers she is his home, not Italy, her. The two have to conquer many struggle in order to be together, and even after they come together, their relationship faces many hurdles.
