Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Romeo & Juliet (2013)

This film is a remake of the classic story of William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Set in Verona, Italy during the middle ages, the town has two great families that rival each other in power and prestige: the Montagues and the Capulets. They have an on-going feud that the Prince of Verona wishes to quell, but it seems like every chance they get the Montagues and the Capulets start a fight in the streets.

Romeo (played by Douglas Booth) is a youth full of passion for love. He is a Montague, but he cares not for that. All he thinks about, day and night, is the fantasy of being in love. At first he loves a girl named Rosalind, until he sneaks into a dance of the rival Capulets and there sees the beauty of Juliet the young daughter of the great Master Capulet and the sole heir to the house of Capulet. Even though they should hate each other, by tradition of the houses being so divided by the feud, they fall in love instead. Rosalind forgotten, Romeo falls deeply in love with Juliet. Romeo and Juliet, with the help of Juliet's nurse, conspire with the Friar to secretly marry which they do because the Friar believes this may be the one way to heal the disagreements and bring the two powerful families together.

The rivalry between the families continues in the streets with a street brawl between Romeo's cousin Mercutio and Juliet's cousin Tibalt. Romeo tries to stop the fighting but instead gets in the way and Mercutio is slain. In a rage, Romeo kills Tibalt to avenge the death of his cousin Mercutio. Romeo is then banished from Verona, much to the dismay of Juliet who wants to kill herself over the loss of her new husband.

The Friar prepares a sleeping potion that will make it appear that Juliet has died so they can secret her away to be with the man she loves, her Romeo. The Friar sends a message of the plan to Romeo but because the messenger is delayed it does not arrive in time so Romeo gets the false news from Benvolio, his other cousin, that Juliet has died.

Romeo comes to the tomb of Juliet and kills himself with poison before Juliet can awake from the sleeping potion. Juliet awakens, sees her lover dead and kills herself also. Both the powerful families of Capulet and Montague lament the loss of their youngest, dearest ones, and finally make peace with each other when they bury the two young lovers together.
Best part of story, including ending: This remake is OK but the Zeffirelli one of 1968 was much better. They change the story in ways that are not necessary and do not use the language of the the original Shakespeare verison which is really the most beautiful part of this story.

Best scene in story: The scene in the garden, when Romeo overhears Juliet professing her love for him, is a real winner.

Opinion about the main character: Romeo in this film (in this case is Douglas Booth) is really super handsome in a very classic way. He is almost like a living representation of Michelangelo's David. He has the perfect look for this part and it is no wonder he beat out about 300 other actors to get this role.
