The story is about a woman who has a dream that calls her to an unknown jungle, and she attempts to travel there. Julian Carter is a single mother who has a recurring dream of a sweet song being sung in an unknown jungle. She also has a baby boy named Stephen. Despite her family's protestations, Julian decides to take a boat to the jungle near New Guinea. On the way there, the boat sinks, leaving her to fear the worst for her lost child.

She awakens to strange men who speak in a strange tongue. They tie her up and take her back to their camp. She is kept inside a dark pit for several days while she awaits her assumed death. It turns out that another American was also in the pit. He asks her if she is the woman from his dream; the woman who is supposed to save all of the tribes in the jungle.
After a tribal meeting where the chiefs of three tribes bid to take Julian as a wife, there is a disagreement, and she is sentenced to die. A maidservant accompanies Julian everywhere she goes, and they become close. The maidservant speaks broken English and tries to translate and explain as much as she can to Julian. When the maidservant frees Julian and tells her to flee to a neighboring tribe, the mystery begins to unravel.
During all of the back and forth between tribes over whether or not Julian should be killed, it is revealed that the fiercest chief has her missing child. The child she thought was dead. When all of the signs point to a war breaking out between the tribes to name a new leader of all the people, a mysterious figure appears on a mountain. All of the chiefs are terrified of him.
Julian ends up meeting that man on a mountain, and he sings the song she heard in her dreams. He explains she is part of something big and the future of the tribe's children depends on her.
On the day she is to be killed, she starts singing the song from her dream. All of the leaders and tribes-people are astounded. It melts their hearts and they agree to peace.
At the end of the story, when Julian is older and her child is grown, she sends him off into the world to tell his story and save others. She remains with the tribe where she believes she belongs.

I liked that she takes responsibility for her actions and decides to follow her destiny. There was nothing I disliked about her.
