The Hunger Games Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Hunger Games

Katniss Everdeen must compete in a cutthroat game organized by a government that seeks to suppress its people. Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12, part of a nation called Panem where the government seeks to control its citizens with fear by running annual "Hunger Games". The story begins with Katniss' younger sister being randomly picked as the female tribute for the hunger games. To save her sister's life, Katniss volunteers as tribute. The male tribute from her district is Peeta Mellark. Katniss has excellent hunting skills, especially with a bow and arrow however Peeta is simply a baker.

On the train ride to the Capitol, Katniss and Peeta meet their mentor, a perpetually drunk man named Haymitch. Katniss and Peeta meet the other tributes and are counciled by Haymitch to learn about the weaknesses of their competitors and form alliances with the best tributes from the other districts. Katniss and Peeta also must impress some sponsors who can help them during the games. During a live interview, Peeta also reveals that he and Katniss are lovers, which causes quite a stir among viewers.

Katniss and Peeta form an alliance with a little girl named Rue but Rue ends up being killed when she and Katniss fall into the trap the other tributes set for them. During the Hunger Games, Peeta saves Katniss from an attack from other tributes. Later on, because of a change in the rules allowing for more than one tribute to win, Katniss saves a feverish Peeta by acting as if she loves him so that the audience will pity them as star-crossed lovers and send medication to treat him. Soon after, the rules are returned to the original, where only one tribute can win.

Katniss and Peeta commit themselves to eating poisonous berries to kill themselves however they are rescued at the last minute by the hunger games organizers who realize the rebellion their deaths may cause among their fans.
Best part of story, including ending: I liked how the twisted love story between Katniss and Peeta - they might both have feelings for each other but it is complicated because of the nature of the game they're both competing in.

Best scene in story: My favourite scene was when Katniss and Peeta are about to eat the Nightlock berries because it was a very epic moment when they ended up forcing the Gamemakers to let them both win.

Opinion about the main character: I like that Katniss is very independent and skilled with the arrow. I wish she treated Peeta better, though I can understand why she is confused towards him.
