Detailed plot synopsis reviews of A Christmas Carol (2009)

This animation film is based on the famous book of the same name, written by Charles Dickens, about a miserly old man who must face his worst fears and change his ways before his death. Jim Carrey is the voice of Ebenezer Scrooge and the animated character looks quite a bit like him as well. Scrooge is such a penny-pincher that he begrudges giving a single day of Christmas as a holiday for his staff. The famous "bah humbug" is his reaction to the whole celebration, which he considers a complete waste of time and money. After his business associate, Jacob Marley dies, one Christmas Eve, late at night, Marley comes to torment him as a ghost apparition with a warning to Scrooge that unless he changes his miserly ways he will end up like him, dragging heavy chains around, ever restless, until the end of time. Marley tells him, three ghosts will come to visit him that night and he should pay careful attention to what they show him. Then Marley leaves him, dragging his chains behind.

The first ghost to come is a fiery little ghost, which shows him past Christmas times. He shows Scrooge his sad childhood, where he spent Christmas alone in boarding school abandoned by his father. As a young man Scrooge starts to have some business success, becomes engaged to a beautiful young woman, but she breaks up with him when it is clear he cares more about money, than he cares about her. He realizes what a terrible mistake he made. He cannot bear to see anything more so he extinguishes the little fire and finds himself back in bed in his cold dark mansion, more frightened than ever.

The second ghost shows him what everyone else is doing on this Christmas. They are having fun. His nephew Fred (with the voice and appearance of Colin Firth) is laughing and joking about Scrooge with his friends. Bob Cratchit (with the voice and appearance of Gary Oldman) tries to take care of his family with his meager earnings while his son, Tiny Tim suffers and soon will die.

The third ghost shows him a grim future that includes the death of Tiny Tim and his own death that nobody mourns. He is taken to a grave that leads to eternal damnation in hell. Scrooge is terrified. He begs the grim reaper for a second chance. Scrooge awakens on Christmas Day a completely changed man. He gives money to the choir singing in the streets, visits his nephew to celebrate with him a bit, and buys the biggest turkey he can find to give to Bob Cratchit for his family.
Best part of story, including ending: It's a classic story and they did a good job with the remake.

Best scene in story: I like the scene with Marley first appears to Scrooge because it scares him so much and he deserves it.

Opinion about the main character: There is little to like about him until he changes his ways, then he is vastly improved which is the point of the story.
