This is the story of a young man who only had one dream: making partner at a law firm, but he comes to realize that there is more to life than being a lawyer. He has a couple days to go before having to write the bar exam and he wants to score points with his boss, Mr. McAllister, so as to obtain a more permanent position within the firm; becoming a lawyer and later a partner at a firm is his one and only dream. After a long day at the office, Rick runs into Mr. McAllister in the elevator and tells him he is willing to do what it takes to prove himself. Mr. McAllister then tells Rick to pick up his niece Michelle and drive her from Georgia to Los Angeles and also asks him to move his possessions to Los Angeles in a U-Haul truck - while having as a passenger the beautiful and free-spirited Michelle who Rick promised Mr. McAllister he wouldn't touch, her pet pig, and Orlick, a hitchhiker the meet on the way to Los Angeles.

The U-Haul truck breaks down on the way, runs out of gas, Rick's clothes get set on fire, they has to stay a sketchy motels. At some point, they make a stop at a beach and that is where Rick and Michelle are starting to grow closer. The truck then gets stolen at a stop, along with Michelle pet pig, and Rick has to fight in a cage match against the thieves to get his truck back, which he manages to do. Michelle tells Rick that there is something between them, which he denies as he wishes to focus solely on the upcoming bar exam. They arrive to Los Angeles where he delivers the possessions to Mr. McAllister and is on his way back to Miami. At the airport, Rick goes through pictures taken by Michelle on the trip and he realizes that he wants to be with her. Mr. McAllister tells him the feelings are mutual, gives him his blessing and tells Rick there will be a position available for him at a branch of his office in Los Angeles. The movie ends with Rick and Michelle reuniting on the beach.
