A Breath of Fresh Air Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of A Breath of Fresh Air

This is the story of a thirty four year old woman who is not happy in her marriage and on the day she requests a divorce from her husband, he dies in an accident and she goes back to her home town to live in her parents' house. Charlotte Lawrence is a 34 year old woman married to Peter who is a workaholic and owns a company in Brussels. They have been moving from one place to another as a result of Peter's work demands, while Charlotte has never been in a position to settle at work because of these movements. Initially she was forced to close her business in their home town and later on left various jobs she had found in different towns. They are now living in Brussels and she has not been lucky this time around to secure a job.

She takes a decision to divorce her husband so that she can go back to her parents home and revive the business she had started eight years ago. This news leaves Peter devastated since he does not understand his wife's predicaments. On his way to work that same day, he is involved in a car crash and dies on the spot.
After her husband's burial, Charlotte returns to Cheshire village where she grew up and her sister Hillary takes full responsibility of her affairs with the idea of bringing her up to her feet again after all she has been through. She even tries to hook her up with Alex, one of the tenants whom she considers to be gorgeous since she believes that her sister is still too young to remain a widow. Her life in the village is an interesting one since she is the center of attraction and there are many rumors going round about her.
Best part of story, including ending: I like the clarity in description of characters

Best scene in story: Favorite scene is when Charlotte reads Christina's note at the airport since it puts a smile on her face and helps her deal with the guilt.

Opinion about the main character: I don't like the fact that Charlotte is reluctant to move on yet she was intending to divorce her husband before his death.
