The story depicts the life of Thomas Hudson, the fictional painter, at three different points. Thomas Hudson is a successful painter and writer who deals with his deteriorating family while living in the Key West area. First, Hudson experiences a night of drinking with his other artistic friends. Then, his kids arrive and they spend the day with him and his friends, helping him break out of writer's block. The story then skips ahead to where he's living in Cuba in a mansion, relaxing frequently in a bar. His wife comes by, though they have been previously separated, and they experience a romantic night. In the third portion of the story, Hudson and a few of his sailing buddies are out at sea during the Second World War, searching for German U-boats. In a shootout between Germans and the sailors, Hudson dies.

Best part of story, including ending:
It was a good example of Hemingway's sort of matter-of-fact wording. The setting was beautiful and shed some light on the life of the author.
Best scene in story:
My favourite scene was where Hudson is out fishing with his children and one of the children attempts to catch a marlin. It is an experience that exemplifies the idea that even if one fails,what matters is they tried.
Opinion about the main character:
I liked most that as a character he grew in to his old age in an interesting manner, and it took place between World War Two.
