Shortly after her arrival at Fort Laramie, her mystery man abducts her and brings to his village. His name is Night Hawk and he is a Cheyenne warrior. He is in love with the woman he names "Flame" because of her unusual   Unfortunately, she is not a compliant captor and at first refuses to do anything helpful or domestic. She hopes that if he got sick of her, he might return her to her family. Her plot does not work and she only finds herself more immersed in Cheyenne culture.

As Night Hawk does small, thoughtful things for her, Flame finds that she is developing strong romantic feelings for him. In addition, he has had similar dreams to her own, except that she was in his dreams long before they met. It is also interesting to note that she quickly becomes acclimated to her new life, once she makes the attempt to do so.

Night Hawk and Flame are considered by the Cheyenne people to be married and their relationship develops into an intimate relationship as well. The obvious results occur and she settles into a domestic life, eventually learning to love her new life style. The life of Indians at that time were stressful and often transient, so Flame gets an emergency education in cooking, cleaning and the proper ways to conduct herself within the tribe, and makes a few mistakes along the way.

Life cannot be without conflict and therefore they have many challenges to meet. Lack of food, illness and people from both cultures would like to see them separated. They commit to one another and through wars, death and social pressure, their love stayed true. Her strong will corresponds to his
dominant personality and it seems as if they are better together than they would be apart.

As a final note, readers should be aware that Night Hawk is the typical, dominant Native American seen in this type of novel. However, he is much more romantic and the way that the story is written adds to the authenticity of the tale. Therefore, In this novel, he is easier to relate to than similar characters have been in other books.
Best part of story, including ending: I loved that there were many authentic details introduced throughout the story. Religious and cultural traditions were observed and the details that were used in describing everyone and everything that was mentioned. That contributed to a better understanding and empathy for the characters.

Best scene in story: When they first made love, it was so sweet and romantic, that it makes you wish everyone could get her own Night Hawk. He was considerate and passionate, while she was nervous but eager.

Opinion about the main character: I loved the character growth that Sarah/Flame experienced. When she is first introduced, she is a helpless, rude girl with few practical skills and little consideration for others. As she lives and works with the Cheyenne, we see her mature into an intelligent and devoted wife and mother.
