Big Girl Panties Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Big Girl Panties

Holly is a recent widow who is very overweight until one day she meets a celebrity personal trainer who could change the course of her life. She meets Logan on an airplane, and he is physically fit, attractive, and above all, friendly. He helps her through the flight's take - off, as she is afraid of flying. They get to talking and learn that they live near each other in New Jersey. Logan offers Holly a discounted rate for personal training, and she says she will take him up on it. This is not something that Logan needs to do; in fact, he doesn't need to look for business anywhere, as he has an established career as a celebrity personal trainer.

Logan gets home to find his sometime fling of a girlfriend at his house waiting. She is a gorgeous model, as Logan only dates models. But she puts the pressure on him for more, and he breaks it off. He goes to his friend Chase's house, and hangs out with him and his wife, Amanda. He tells his friend about Holly, and calls her his ugly duckling.

Holly ends up taking him up on his offer, to his surprise. Under his tutelage she trains hard, and watches what she eats. Soon the weight begins to fall off. She no longer dreads going to her class, as things are easier for her to do, and she and Logan have even entered into a friendly, teasing relationship. Holly begins to feel better about herself, but is still surrounded by her husband's things in their big, empty home. Confronted by the sadness of this one night, Holly breaks down, intending to binge eat her feelings. Instead, she calls Logan, who hurries over and helps her through the moment.

Holly keeps working, and has almost reached her goal weight. Logan has noticed, and begins to feel attracted to Holly, although he is confused at this response, since he usually dates models. The two of them begin to hang out with Amanda and Chase, and Holly and Amanda become friends. Amanda urges Chase to date Holly, saying that he already has feelings for her. Eventually, Holly and Chase date, although he is too embarrassed of her to take her on dates in public at first. This is where the story gets weird.

They are dating, but never leave her house at first, because basically Logan is ashamed of her. He likes her company and he loves sex with her, but he also doesn't want anyone to see him with her. Logan really likes her, but also spends time thinking about how to get the last of the weight off of her. Liposuction actually crosses his mind. This guy is seriously shallow, and we as the readers are supposed to believe he is undergoing the transformation. He eventually does start to introduce Holly to his friends and lifestyle, and this is where it all comes to a head. Holly runs into Logan's ex-girlfriend, a model, who tells Holly that Logan called her an ugly duckling.

Predicatively, Holly gets mad and doesn't want to see him anymore. The ex-girlfriend is waiting for Logan at his house, and instead of raking her over the coals for being a b-word, he is pretty nice to her and lets her down easy. He and Holly argue, because he realizes finally that he doesn't care that she is still not ever going to have a swimsuit model body, he loves her for who she is. After a conversation with her best friend, who is also kind of a jerk, Holly takes him back.
Best part of story, including ending: I actually didn't like this book, although it started off good. I couldn't get past the fact that Logan was ashamed of Holly while they were dating. I didn't feel that when he got over it, that it was genuine.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene is the one where Logan goes to her house in the middle of the night, and helps her through her issues with her weight and her husband's things. She is really suffering, and he helps her to finally sort through his things and to take his hospital bed down.

Opinion about the main character: I loved the main character Holly. She had such a great attitude throughout the entire book, and never gave up. She was always true to herself.
