The Hot Box Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Hot Box

Lydia plays by her own rules. She runs so much game that she begins to think she may be a sex-addict. Between her live in lover Glenn, and his best friend Phil, who she sleeps with on the down- low several times a week while Glenn is at work, Lydia is putting in over-time. She can't seem to stop smoking marijuana long enough to realize that there is more to life than sex. She works part time at the Food Lion grocery store, where her uncle is assistant manager. She doesn't know what she wants to do with her life, because she won't particpate in anything other than sex games.

Determined not to be caught with her heart in hand again, she goes cold turkey on sex.

By the time the friends realize they are being played by Lydia, their third buddy Jacour who returns to Charlotte, North Carolina after being away almost a decade are in for the run of their lives. Bromances, can stand a lot, and when they go wrong, there is usually a woman in the picture who they both wanted. When three guys are involved it makes matters that much messier.

Lydia's best friend Milena is a veterinarian. She used to be deeply in love with Jacour, the third muskateer to Glenn and Phil. Jacour is the leader of the pack in women, but only because he is a star athlete. Playing for the Yankees comes with endless perks by way of groupies who want the chance to say they are sleeping or have slept, with a professional athlete. Jacour, has women at his beck and call, but can't get over Melina. She's the one who got away, not that she stayed lonely when she and Jacour ended their tumultuous relationship. Busy and dedicated became her focus - strictly work. Milena focused on finishing school, while the game of baseball and a fat contract pulled Jacour away. The real game was that Jacour proposed to Melina and then slept with a random woman right before their wedding. This one act of betrayal sends Melina into a sexual drought where she practices celibacy for almost a decade to get over the hurt.   Even though she and Jacour had been in love since junior high and as undergraduates at Duke University, the real world can be a harsh place. Jacour comes home and tries to ease his way back into a friendship with Melina using Lydia to do his bidding. He wants her and her forgiveness. His buddies, Glenn and Phil don't know that Lydia is working both of them, and Melina begins to embrace moving forward and becoming sexually active after a very long hiatus. Seems she hasn't gotten over Jacour, even after nine years and being hurt to the core.

When Melina decides to respond to Jacour's request for a face-to-face it all comes back. Being embarrassed on her wedding day, trying to understand the hurt and why Jacour would sleep with someone at the bachelor party, and most important why she can't shake the feelings for someone who disrespected her so badly.

Jacour is not the only man interested in Melina. Her platonic buddy Yoseuf, buddy cooks for her regularly and sleeps over (he's a good man who has been temporairly displaced) he's started to let Melina know he's interested in taking things to another level. He may sleep in Melina's home but they are not sexual. Confused, Melina's heart is opening for Jacour again and it seems her legs will soon follow suit. Too bad for Melina, Jacour is simply not a one woman man. He can't seem to get it togehter, even with the chance at a do-over with Melina.

Melina meets her true love at Starbucks, marries him and the happy couple awaits the birth of their first child. Lydia, finally wakes up and stops sleeping with Glenn and Phil which allows the men to attempt re-bonding. It may not happen because there are rumors circulating that they are down-low lovers. Sleeping with each other and with Lydia. A hot mess! As Lydia gets herself together a chance meeting places her in front of a Broadway producer who sees her gifts, and like that, she becomes an overnight sensation. Thankfully she realizes that while sex is great, it isn't everything and that she deserves so much more out of life.
Best part of story, including ending: I hated all the lying between men who were referred to as the Three Muskateers. Best friends should treat each other better.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene was the final one where Melina and her husband lock eyes, and he kisses her pregnant belly. Love.

Opinion about the main character: I liked Melina's honesty. She was very direct throughout the book.
