The Hidden Cottage Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Hidden Cottage

This story is about a woman who wants the best for her family but ends up frustrated and tired, but eventually finds the love she has been missing all her life. Mia is married to Jeff and a mother of three; Jensen, Eliza and Daisy. Jensen has had a difficult childhood since Jeff abandoned them before he was born only to show up when he is four years old. His relationship with his father is however not good since they are always involved in arguments that mess up most of their family dinners. On Jensen's thirtieth birthday, the family plans to come together as has been their tradition, but this time round they have a different expectation. Jensen has promised to bring her new girlfriend to meet the family. Daisy on the other hand is planning to break the news that she is relocating to Australia with Scott, her boyfriend.

Owen a new neighbor has just moved into what is commonly referred to as the hidden cottage owing to its location in the woods. Mia and her two friends Georgina and Muriel decide to give him a welcome visit just to make sure he doesn't feel lonely. During the village fete, Owen meets Mia's family and they all seem to like him. He even goes ahead to organize an afternoon out for them at his cottage. Owen feels attracted to Mia and hopes to spend more time with her but realizes she is married. Mia however responds by showing interest and they end up having an affair, which to Owen is the best thing that has ever happened in his life. Jeff on his first encounter with Owen thinks of him as a good for nothing attention seeker.
There's however something else that is upsetting Jeff. It dawns on him that his favorite daughter Daisy is slipping from his control and intends to get married to Scott. His obsession with Daisy makes him neglect Eliza especially at a point when she is going through a difficult relationship breakup. He is also not interested in Jensen's life and always considers him a failure.
A road accident claims Daisy's life an occurrence that brings about a different turn of events to the family. Jeff feels like his life can never go on, while Mia's sadness leads her to pushing Owen away. Jensen on the other hand feels responsible for the accident but manages to pull through while Eliza experiences a change in lifestyle as she learns to take life less seriously.
Rumors about Mia and Owen are quickly spreading in the village and Jeff happens to overhear one such conversation. He confronts Owen and gives him a beating out of fury, but Owen later on realizes that Jeff too has dirty secrets he is keeping. The night of Daisy's accident, he was with two call girls who he paid for sex, and that explains why Mia could not reach him on time to tell him about the accident. The current turn of events leads to an automatic divorce between Jeff and Mia. Mia moves in with Owen at the Hidden cottage while Jeff moves to the UAE to start a new life. Eliza is getting married to Simon, the man who helped her get over her obsession with work. Mia for the first time feels happy and is glad that Eliza and Jensen are happy for her new found love.
Best part of story, including ending: I like this story because the end of it is not predictable from the beginning creating a sense of suspense

Best scene in story: The best scene is when Jeff is attacked by Punin the Peacock after beating up Owen, since this gives Owen an opportunity to understand the real source of his devastation. It is neither Daisy's death nor his affair with Mia but the affair he had with call girls the night his Daisy died in a car crash.

Opinion about the main character: I like the fact that Mia loves all her children and tries to make her husband understand them with their differences.
