Vivenna goes to Hallandren hoping to save Siri from the monstrous God King but again, she ends up meeting some rebels and assassins instead. She also meets Lemex, a countryman of hers and he bestows his Biochromatic breath to her and dies.
Siri spends many nights trying to get the God King, Susebron, to create a baby with her, as is her duty. She finds him scary only to eventually find out that he is more scared of her and has no idea at all of what he is doing; he has no say in anything and Siri finds out his tongue has been cut out.
After several weeks, Siri and the God King become friends; Vivenna meets a man named Vasher who teaches her the secret to using the Biochromatic breath. They work together to undo the damage done by the rebels and assassins Vivenna met and worked with; she later found out they were working against her.
In the end, they find out that it was the Pahn Kahl priests who started the war between Hallandren and Idris. The priests try to kill Siri and the God King but one of the awakened gods called Lightsong and he comes to their rescue. Lightsong sacrifices himself for the God King and he rescues Siri. They are then rescued by Vasher and Vivenna. By this time, the God King and Siri are already deeply in love and Vivenna wants to explore her Biochromatic talents more.
The main theme of this book is about reversals; you can see it in the way Siri and Vivenna were reversed in their roles, and how Idris was so different from Hallandren. You will also see it in the role played by Siri and the God King.
