Taken Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Taken

This is the story of a girl who is kidnapped and the scenarios that occur that can either kill her or keep her alive. In the near and distant future the protection and welfare of individuals is at the utmost concern. The biggest and most developing crime in America in 2035 will be kidnapping. In this book Edward Bloor writes of a young girl named Charity Meyers and her unsuspected kidnapped that leaves everything about the world she knew in question. As precautions take place in the world of kidnapping neighborhoods are equipped with gates and guards. The "Highlands" is the so called "save haven" for those in fear of getting kidnapped. As Charity being a member of the Highlands, she doesn't have fear of being kidnapped. Until one day she is taken into an ambulance against her will. Unaware and untrained to the situation Charity sits put and tries to negotiate with her kidnappers in hopes that her dad may come in contact with the individuals. It's clear what the kidnappers want, and that's money. As it takes longer and longer for the kidnappers to come in contact with the family of Charity it becomes clear that something is extremely wrong. After being able to flee the compound she was being held in Charity becomes aware of the fact that the area she has been kidnapped in is oddly familiar. It's a recent vacation get away that she used to go to when she was little. Charity ends up investigating more and finds out that the sole ringleader in her kidnapping ring is her very own father. Her father attempted to be "kidnapped" as well and wanted to fool her step mom into thinking the two of them have been dead. Charity couldn't believe what has become and is in a way understand where her dad was coming from. Charity's step mom was a money mooching woman who contributed nothing to the family. In the end Charity and her father change their identification and take on different lifestyles and move on with their lives. The book ends on showing readers that you can't really trust anyone, and that even the people closest to you will go to extreme length's to get what they want.

Best part of story, including ending: The book contained an absurd amount of flashbacks which I was not too fond of. I personally didn't like the story going back into time and retracing footsteps, and then coming back to real time. It presented me with a hard time reading the novel, which could have been great without the unnecessary flashback cliffhangers.

Best scene in story: My favorite scene was Charity not overacting and breathing calmly as she was being kidnapped. I know if I was put into that situation I would be yelling my brains out and causing trouble.

Opinion about the main character: I disliked the fact that she sided with her father. I don't think that was the best way to deal with the step mom. I feel that Charity should have stood up for herself and told her dad that lying just to get away is not the best option.
