The Currents of Space Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Currents of Space

A planet named Florina is the main distributor of a fiber called kyrt, however their planet is in danger of a natural disaster. 9,000 years into the future, there is an empire named the Trantorians that occupy more than half of the galaxy and dominate it. In one of the planets of the galaxy, there is a fiber named a kyrt that can only be grown on a planet named Florina. There is a planet named Sark that always bullies Florina for kyrt. The Florinians harvest in the fields of kyrt and are treated as lesser people by the Sarkites. Trantorians want to add the two planets to it's empire. The author tries to clearly show the comparison between the Sarks and the American South during slavery.

There is a person named Rik that can predict the future. He predicts that Florina will be destroyed. His predictions send Sark, Florina and the Trantorians into panic mode. Rik clearly states that Florina's sun is very close to exploding. It is soon revealed by scientists that kyrt is able to grow on Florina because of the special rays coming from the sun. The scientists learn how to manipulate other suns in order to grow kyrt.

The Sarkites refuse to accept the prediction that Florina's sun is going to explode. They hate this prediction because it means that they will no longer be able to exploit the Florinians for kyrt. However, they soon find out that the scientists discovered how to make kyrt on other planets. The Trantorians offer to buy the planet of the Sarks, and the Sarks accept because they want to go grow kyrt on other planets. Florina is evacuated by the Trantorians.
Best part of story, including ending: What I liked about this story was that everyone came together to rescue Florina. Even though they were fighting for kyrt, they found how to make it on other planets and saved the Florinians.

Best scene in story: The best part was when Rik began predicting the future. This was an intense part because the things he was saying were very scary. Rik's prediction was very suspenseful because it made you feel like it was real.

Opinion about the main character: What I liked most about Rik was that he was from Earth. He had the goodness of the people of Earth. His actions made me be happy to be from this planet.
