Sex and the City Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Sex and the City

This exciting and compelling story tells of the dating woes between four women, while showcasing the relationship of the main character and the man she has grown to love. Carrie Bradshaw is a well-known sex columnist for a New York City newspaper. Her columns are based off true events that her and her three best girlfriends encounter while trying to date in the great big city of Manhattan. The women pride themselves in their success yet all of them have a difficult time finding the right man.

This novella is based off of essays written by the author, Candace Bushnell. The character Carrie is loosely based off of Bushnell and her friends' experiences in the big city. The novel is a well written piece that really captures the trials and tribulations of dating, regardless of where you live.

In the beginning of the novella, you are automatically drawn in by a story of two people from Manhattan who had dated and broke up. The woman fell in love and the man seemingly just disappeared. Carrie had to break it to the poor woman that dating in Manhattan typically never ended well. Carrie goes on to explain in first person that dating and relationships aren't what they used to be. She is constantly left to wonder why certain things go awry in her and her friends' relationships.

Eventually, the story unfolds and Carrie finds what she considers to be the perfect man for her. Mr. Big is all that Carrie could possibly want in a man, but finds out that what she envisions is an illusion she created. Mr. Big actually exists but Carrie is blinded by her ideal vision of the perfect man. She soon realizes that Mr. Big is far from perfect and they go through several beautiful and even trying times throughout the story.

There isn't a happy ending to this story. It isn't necessarily dramatic, but Mr. Big and Carrie break up. She once again finds herself alone. However, she realizes that with the help of her amazing girlfriends and the success she finds in her writing career, that she can be happy without a man by her side.
Best part of story, including ending: I enjoyed this story because it is easy to relate to. Many single woman have the same thoughts and problems that arise in Carrie and her friends' lives.

Best scene in story: My favorite part of the story is when Carrie finds herself in a relationship with a man named Dudley due to the great sexual relations that they had. She soon finds that Dudley isn't what she wanted.

Opinion about the main character: I particularly love Carrie's character because it relates to me as a women and a writer. She is a very genuine character.
