The director of the musical is a character called Zach (played by Michael Douglas). He is a tyrant and a manipulative ego-maniac, yet we still get to know his softer side which is brought out by his reactions to the life stories of the dancers. He forces them all to confess their most intimate details, in order to get a position in the chorus line for his Broadway musical. It is psycho-drama at its best, punctuated by wonderful dance routines and memorable songs. The dancers' recount interesting stories about their lives, that are excruciatingly personal, such as getting their breast and buttocks surgically improved to get better jobs, coming to terms with their own sexuality, and most of all wanting so much just to gain approval from the godlike Zach so they can dance.
The music is outstanding and the energy is very strong. It looks as if Zach has everything completely under his control until his long-lost love appears without warning. She was the star before, his protégé', and she left him without even saying good bye. Now she suddenly returns and all she wants to do is dance, not as a star like before, but as a simple chorus line dancer, because she really needs the job and most importantly she, like all the others, really needs to dance.
Best part of story, including ending:
The revelations that are given by the dancers about their personal lives are incredibly real, true, and heartfelt.
Best scene in story:
The end. Because it shows hundreds of dancers all dancing together, and all looking like each others. They look almost all the same, but they all feel each and every one distinct and different and important.
Opinion about the main character:
The main character is very arrogant and insensitive. He uses his position of power to mentally abuse people. He makes the dance audition a personal confession instead of a measure of the person's dancing skills.
A group of dancers are auditioning for a Broadway musical, some dancers get cut, some don't until the director has about 20 people to choose the dancers he wants, and cuts it down to about 10 people. At the end they perform the dance they have been rehearsing off camera.

The movie basically shows you the process of an audition, yet with a twist. It shows the hardships, and perserverance of the people who try out. It shows that there is so much more than what one would expect.

Zach is a choreographer who is auditioning dancers for his new play. Zach's old flame Cassie comes back from California where she has just lost a job, hoping for a part in the play. The movie shows the dancers sharing their feelings and why they want this job.
