When Meg Smiles goes to work as the companion of a young princess during her first season, she immediately finds herself attracted to the princess's older brother, Count Etranger. Jean-Marc reciprocates her feelings, and they soon find themselves caught up in an affair. Meg falls in love with the Count, and Jean-Marc sees Meg as his perfect woman. Although he could never marry her because of his high rank, he is unwilling to let Meg out of his life. He becomes determined to make her his mistress. He offers to set her and her sister up for life, if she will be his love buddy. Meg, a parson's daughter, is very reluctant to agree. She loves Jean-Marc, but doesn't wish to ruin her and her sister's reputations by accepting.

When multiple attempts are made on Meg's life Jean-Marc becomes devoted to keeping Meg safe. Meg's resistance towords him begins to dissolve as she is forced to spend so much time with him.
