Unfortunately, Saber was changed by the war. Almost his entire regiment died under his command, and he blames himself. He is also physically scarred. He thinks he is going mad, and decides to stay away from Ella for her own good, no matter how hard she tries to lure him to her.
Ella is hurt by Saber's rejection of her, but keeps trying to make him admit that he loves her. At the same time, her family is trying to find her a suitable husband. Ella begins recieving anonymous messages alluding to her jaded past. Someone is threatening to reveal what happened to her as a child, thereby ruining her.
Saber knows that he can't be with Ella, but is unwilling to let her go completely until he knows that she is safe. He will go to any lengths to make her future secure and to protect her from this new threat. But as he spends more time with Ella, it becomes clear to him that he won't be able to let her go. As they go on, they discover that in order to face their present predicament and their unknown future together, they must first face each other's pasts.
