Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Book 1: In the Light of the Passing

In this fantasy/romance novel, a young commander is torn from his home. Believing his people perished, Shance is drawn into a political struggle on another world. The miners beneath the city of Sarzan are planning a revolt. Commander Vallance, who owns the mines, sets off a series of explosions in the tunnels--effectively cutting off the air supply. In addition to this, he seals his own daughter inside the mines because she is openly sympathetic to the miners' cause.

Believing his own people are lost, Commander Shance agrees to help a fighting unit that is going to Sarzan to assist the miners. He serves the new cause well, but soon learns he has been deceived to gain his cooperation. His own people are still alive and have been safely evacuated to Haleen. Knowing this, Shance is then torn between serving his people and his love for Nadeena, the daughter of Vallance, whom he helped rescue.
To further complicate things, Rotek (one of the head miners) also has feelings for Nadeena. Knowing that Shance has not been totally honest with Nadeena about his full identity, Rotek succeeds in alienating the girl from the pilot. In a short time Shance has to make up his mind on whether he's going to return to his people, or stay on Sarzan with Nadeena--giving up his role of commander.
