Leslie is quirky and unusual and doesn't fit in well in Jesse's town, but Jesse doesn't care. He likes that Leslie is different.

Together the two kids begin playing a make believe game about the magical kingdom of Terabithia. They swing over a creek on a rope swing to enter their kingdom where they imagine they rein and King and Queen. When a tragedy befalls one of the friends the other struggles to overcome grief and to understand a world where life goes on, even after things sometimes go horribly wrong.
