Corduroy Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Corduroy

Corduroy is a toy bear who sits on a shelf in a toy department of a large store. He dreams about someone taking him home, but nobody wants to buy him. People keep running around without even noticing Corduroy. Then one day his dream almost comes true: a young girl stops and looks at him, and tells her mother that she wants this bear. But the mother refuses to buy him. They've already spent all the money, she says, and besides, he's missing a button. The girl leaves.

When the store is closed for the night, Corduroy decides to go look for his lost button. He comes down from the shelf and starts exploring the store. His adventures include getting to the furniture department and trying to take a button off a mattress – unsuccessfully. Corduroy falls off the bed and knocks down a lamp. A security guard hears the noise; he finds Corduroy and takes him back to the toy department.

On the next day, the girl returns. Corduroy still has no button, but she doesn't care! She likes him the way she is, and she has brought all her savings to buy him. Corduroy is going home with her.
