Katie is a small town Texas girl, who has lived in New York for a little over a year now. She still sees things that make her gawk, while no one else even blinks. For example, she saw a fairy riding the subway one day. She works as an assistant to a marketing director named Mimi. This basically makes her Mimi's personal slave. Mimi has a Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde complex. Katie has secretly named her violent side Evil Mimi. The day she sees the fairy riding the subway again, she receives two emails with subject lines of "great opportunities for Katie." Thinking that they are spam she deletes them. After a business meeting with Evil Mimi, another email is in the inbox. It's signed Rodney Gwaltney. She deletes this one as well. That night, when she and her roommates go out for drinks a man, who sat next to her on the subway that morning, comes over and introduces himself as Rod Gwaltney. It unnerves Katie, and she is concerned that he might be stalking her.

The next day Evil Mimi surfaces again. Then a new email from Rodney arrives, saying he hopes he didn't scare her last night and he really would like to talk business with her. Fed up with Mimi, she replies and sets up a meeting. After talking with Rodney and the head of research and development, Owen, she agrees to come to a meeting at MSI Inc. When she comes into the board room there are fairies, elves, and gnomes sitting around the table. Seeing her confusion, the boss asks if she believes in magic. He tells her that MSI stands for Magic, Spells, and Illusions, and then explains that she is one of the rare people who is completely immune to magic. The reason she sees so many strange things is because illusion spells that disguise magical beings from normal people don't work on her. She is very valuable to them because she can spot fake spells, or see hidden clauses, or even spot a magically hidden intruder.
