Evan Evans has settled into the small town of Llanfair in Wales as the local bobby, after a turn as a constable in a larger city. He enjoys the pub comraderie, and finds humor in the ongoing battle between two rival church ministers. He has the respect of the locals, and fits in among the townspeople as one of four Evans; Evans-the-Milk, Evans-the-Meat, Evans-the-Post, and Evans-the-Law. He even has peaked the interest of two local gals from different backgrounds. However, what he does not expect to find is the truth that murder can happen no matter where you live.

The first two murders appear to be tragic accidents on Llanfair's own mountain, which can be quite daunting. Evan believes from the first that something is fishy, even though the Detective Inspector wants no complications from the local law enforcement as he is pursuing a child murderer. Evan Evans decides to investigate with some encouragement from his immediate superior, Watkins. When faced with a suspect that confesses to the crimes, Evan must dig deeper to find the truth.
The investigation leads Evans-the-Law to a possible link between the current deaths and a death of a soldier on the mountain during a training exercise ten years earlier. Evan takes a trip to London only to discover that two of the men who died were friends of the soldier. Now, he must tie the loose ends up before another person is killed.
