Adeline cares for her aunt with cancer during the Great Depression. Her aunt tells her that she resembles her great-aunt from the 1880s who mysteriously disappeared one day in town. Around the same time, Adeline father was murdered, supposedly by the ranch foreman Ben, who also disappeared. One day while in town Adeline sees an old man with bright green eyes who stares at her. Adeline's aunt tells her this is Ben. Adelines' aunt dies a few days after Adeline sees Ben and Adeline is then transported back into the 1880s. Everyone believes that she is her great-aunt Adeline. Throughout the book, Adeline realizes how cruel and spoiled her great-aunt was. Ranch foreman Ben who was the original Adeline's adversary begins to like the new Adeline. Eventually, they both realize how much they like and care for each other.
