   During the period near the end of World War II, the atomic bomb is dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. During this event, six characters are left unharmed by the bomb while the rest of Hiroshima is sunken in the maimed and dead. Miss Toshinki Sasaki, Dr. Masakazu Fugii, Mrs. Hatsuyo Nakamura, Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge, Dr. Terufumi Sasaki, and Reverend Tanimoto try to restore their lives after the horrors of the atomic bomb.

   Dr Sasaki and Dr. Fujii help aid the wounded after the bombing, but many of the doctors are killed and the number of injured overwhelmes them. Miss Sasaki is trapped under the debris and her leg, stuck beneath the rubble, becomes infected. Miss Nakamura's house collapses but she manages to rescue her three children. Mr. Tanimato ferrys wounded people to safe zones. Years later after the bombing, Miss Sasaki converts to Catholisism, Dr. Sasaki works for a large hospital, Dr. Fujii acquires a three-story hospital and lives a rich life, Father Kleinsorge dies of post-radiation effects, Nakamura makes a living by mending clothes, and Mr. Tanimato attends conferences in US for Japanese maidens that were disfigured by the bomb to get plastic surgery.
