Robbins was born Jerome Rabinowitz in New York in 1918. He struggled with his Jewish identity all his life, and changed his name to Robbins when he started dancing on the stage. The book follows his evolution from dancer to choreographer. He was the mastermind behind such great Broadway musicals as West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof.
