Juliana Townsend is a governess hired to take care of a spoiled six year old railroad heiress, Cassandra. When Juliana awakens to a strange noise one night, she finds that Cassandra's guardian, her step-father Ward Cabot, is trying to kill the little girl by putting a pillow over her face. In desperation, she hits him in the head with a candlestick and decides to kidnap Cassandra from the stepfather that is trying to kill her. Rill Banks is a retired cattle drive boss on his way to the Wyoming territory to the new ranch he purchased. On Rill's last drive, a cowboy betrayed him, killing half his drovers and stealing the cattle. After getting the cattle back, and putting the man responsible in jail, Rill still feels guilt for the men depending on him that died. As he and his friend, Cropper, make their way west, they discover Juliana and Cass stowed away in their supply wagon.
Juliana begs Rill to take her and Cass west, and after many refusals, he finally decides to help them. Rill and Juliana feel a powerful attraction for each other, but both have issues that make them fight their attraction. As they begin their slow trek, Rill finds out that Juliana and Cass are hunted, and fights to keep them out of Ward Cabot's hands. The two begin to fall and love and consummate their relationship.
When they reach Cass's grandfather, the situation comes to head when Ward Cabot tries to get his hand's on Cass. Juliana and Rill also must fight through their misgivings about commitment, especially when Juliana finds that she will be having a baby of her own.
