Lord Brandon is travelling to London to save his cousin, Lord Robert, from a disasterous marriage. Robert is determined that he has fallen in love with his mistress, Elise, and has wrote several letters asking her to be his wife. Julian see her for the opportunist she is and demands she releases Robert from her clutches. Elise makes a wager with Lord Julian; if he manages to seduce the most proper woman of the ton, Lady Lilith, the she will release Robert. Lord Julian agrees to the wager, for he secretly finds Lilith attractive, despite her dowdy exterior.
As Julian begins to pursue Lilith, he finds her intelligent and witty, despite the rumors of her frigidity. Lilith, who has already agreed to marry a wealthy older man for the sake of her nieces and nephews, is drawn to Julian and she begins to love his kisses and caresses. On the eve of her capulation to him, she learns of the nefarious bet and informs Julian she never wants to see him again.
Julian discovers that he truly loves Lilith, and when they are thrown together to stop her niece from eloping, they rediscover there passion and Lilith decides to accept Julian, despite the consequences. Together they must fight against the odds, including her fiance, the cunning mistress, and their own misgivings.
