Now, don't think it is all happy times. Hostile Indians were a very real problem, as were prairie fires, blizzards, and the unforgettable threat of fatal accidents or illness. As Abbie grows she faces these challenges and more, including becoming a teacher at the school house while her sweetheart is off fighting in the Civil War.

When Will Deal returns from the war Abbie finds herself his radiant bride. The rest of the tale is of Abbie and Will's life, their homesteading in Nebreska, and raising a family.

This novel reminds the reader of "These Is My Words" by Nancy E. Turner in the fact that it spans many years. The book begins in 1854 with Abbie as a child, and ends when she is an old woman with grandchildren.
