Lady Anastasia Ivanovna Kaptereva, a Russian heiress, has been sentened to death for murdering her cousin and fiance Prince Mikhail Angelovsky. Tasia actually does not know if she is guilty; she remembers only that she went to Mikhail's home and awoke with the murder weapon. She escapes from prison by faking her death and exiling herself to England. Her English cousins find her a position as the governess for the daughter of Lucas Stokehurst, the marquess of Stokehurst.

She immediately falls into friendship with her charge and becomes intrigued by her employer but knows she cannot remain forever. She is constantly looking over her shoulder for Nikolas, Mikhail's brother, whom she knows would search everywhere for justice. However, she cannot help but fall in love with Luke; she reveals herself to him and marries him.
Nikolas does find her and brings her back to Russia. She regains her memory of what happened to Mikhail, but because of the corrupt government (and because it is actually a government official who is guilty), she cannot be exonerated. So, Luke brings her home to England where they can live happily ever after.
