But then the distant and unnamed Enemy strikes, invading his family's home, murdering for the clues his parents had found to the City's location.

Recovering from the devastating loss, he offers himself for a medical experiment, and becomes an Interface -- a living person who can access the interstellar internet directly with his mind.

He survives the surgery, but his Interface is flawed. Seeking a place among Interfaces despite his handicap, he pursues his obsessive interest in finding the City of a Million Legends.

This brings him back into confrontation with the murderer of his family who has never stopped watching him and manipulating his life -- without his knowledge.
