Inside the coach is Cyn Malloren. Cyn, a soldier, has been recuperating from a lengthy illness and is feeling restless, so, impulsively offers to help the young "Charles" and his widowed sister escape their pursuers.

Cyn soon learns that Charles is Chastity, a young woman whose named is associated with one of the most salacious scandals of London society. Chastity was found in bed with a man, a situation engineered by her father. Chastity defied him and is now shunned by society. Cyn's family are leaders of English society. His oldest brother is a close confidant of the King and a long time enemy of Chastity's father. But with Chastity's father in pursuit, Cyn is not prepared to abandon them. A huge reward is offered for their capture. To throw the searchers off their scent, Cyn dresses as a woman. On the run together, Cyn and Chastity become lovers. His kindness and her bravery lead the two to start falling in love even though they know that their families would never allow any relationship between them.
