Hugh the Relentless and Lady Alice are searching for the same thing; and unusual green stone that would secure Hugh's position as leader of his fortress. They agree to a betrothal of convienence, but Hugh also wants someone to run his household while Alice wants to enter a convent to study. When they find the stone, they realize that the greed that surrounded it has not completely vanished, putting them both in serious danger. Hugh's enemy is still on the loose, and is bound by hate and determination to destroy what the newly married couple have accomplished.
