Anita Blake is a vampire executioner. She owes a friend a favor so he calls her to help solve some strange murders. The lucky victims are the people that actually died. However, there are some victims that are still alive. Anita believes they have been turned into zombie like creatures and she is the only one that can track the evil that has caused this terror.

Anita Blake goes to New Mexico to repay the favor she owes Edward for killing his back-up. Lots of guns, hand to hand, two vicious serial killers, and the usual Blake wise-cracking. Readers learn more about Edward and his desire for a family, but the "boys" (Richard and Jean-Claude) are not present.
