This novel is written in the first person from the viewpoint of the Honourable Venetia Flaxton, an extremely spoiled, rich, English upper class, young woman of 26 who falls in love with the Dean of Starbridge Cathedral, who happens to be in his sixties, married and a close friend of her father. This is not the first time Howatch has set a book deep in the folds of the Anglican Church and much of the information is overly stuffy, as are the characters who are members of the clergy and their families. The action is set in 1963 though Venetia is telling her tale twenty years later.
