For a second wife, Julian is looking for someone just the opposite. He chooses Sophy Dorring, a country spinster. She surprises him by listing demands he must meet before she will wed including taking her to London and not consummating the marriage until later. But he agrees and they marry.

Their marriage has a number of bumps especially when Julian tries unsuccessfully to seduce Sophy. In London, Julian sees Sophy has character as well as loyalty and soon realizes she loves him. Sophy meanwhile has to resist Julian's attempts to control her and try to protect her herself as he uses her feelings while seeming not to return her love. At the same time, Sophy tries to find out what happened to her sister who died and the true circumstances of Julian's first wife's death.
