The gentle Shakers come to tug at the heart of Daisy Webb when she and her younger brother are taken by her Aunt Paratine from their Kentucky home to live with the Shakers during the turmoil of the Civil War with her daddy missing in the fighting and her mother dead. Daisy finds herself in a strange world of work, simplicity, and religious life given over to celibacy and devotion.
