The gentle Shakers come to tug at the heart of Daisy Webb when she and her younger brother are taken by her Aunt Paratine from their Kentucky home to live with the Shakers during the turmoil of the Civil War with her daddy missing in the fighting and her mother dead. Daisy finds herself in a strange world of work, simplicity, and religious life given over to celibacy and devotion. Over the months Daisy learns to be more than just a "winter Shaker", one who came to the community in hard times then departs giving nothing in return. Daisy finds the lively and simple community's devotion to God and service to one another provide her purpose and meaning for life that brings her a joy and fulfillment she had never thought possible after the ravages of war.
