Jeremy Cobb, a college professor, is obsessed with Katie Wyler, an early settler in the hills of Tennessee. Katie's family was killed by a group of Native Americans. Only her younger brother Andrew was able to get away. Katie was taken captive to Ohio territory. Eventually she was able to escape and made her way on foot back to Tennessee. Jeremy decides to follow a portion of the path Katie may have taken on her trek home. With no hiking experience, Jeremy fills his backpack with unnecessary items. He discards most along the trail, becoming very ill and lost on the mountains.

Meanwhile, Harm Sorley, age 63, convicted murderer, escapes from the local penitentiary. In his deluded mind, he heads home to the Tennessee mountains. Twenty years after the murder, no one is very concerned about the escape of an old, sick man. Until, that is, Harm's ex-wife is found dead and a baby from a local family goes missing.
