This is the first novel in a quartet about the Welsh princes during the thirteenth century. Henry III is king of England and eager to bring Wales totally under his control. The first person narrator is Sampson, the illegitimate son of a ladies maid in the family of Griffith, the eldest son of Lewellyn. It is, however, Llewellyn's younger son David who succeeds him as prince. Sampson is born on the same day as Griffith's second son named Llewellyn after his grandfather. Llewellyn remains in Wales when his mother takes her children to the English court to negotiate on her husband's behalf. David dies childless and Llewellyn succeeds him. This is the story of Llewellyn and how he unites all the lords and princes of Wales together against Henry. Sampson is reunited with Llewellyn when he accompanies Owen, the eldest son, back to Wales. As usual Edith Pargeter is spot on with historical facts and weaves her fiction around them.
