The family school as Jake finds out is actually a "cooperative education" experiment where each of the Applewhites' children are expected to create their own curriculum and courses. Although very angry and stand-offish at first Jake is quickly drawn in by the family and their accepting ways and soon finds himself pitching in on the families big project- a local production of "The Sound of Music" that will be held in their barn. As E.D. and Jake deal with many trials and difficulties working together on the production they develope a stronger friendship as well as discover some hidden talents that end up saving the show.
