The Artificial Silk Girl Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Artificial Silk Girl

Doris is a young, working class, German woman in the early 1930's. She comes from a small town, and she wants to be a star. Infatuated with the glamorous images she sees in advertisements and on film, she steals a fur coat, leaves her hometown, and travels to Berlin. There, she must make ends meet by dating men who will feed, clothe, and house her. When Doris discovers that city life involves more poverty than glamor, she is taken in by an educated man whose wife has left him. Here, Doris learns about love, and finds that there are more important things in life than becoming a star.
