The lights of Ember, powered by a generator in pipeworks, are starting to flicker. These lights provide the only light for the city, which has a dark brown sky. Little do they know what's about to happen.
While completing her messenger duties, Lina starts to find out things about Ember. She starts to wonder what's in the darkness at the outskirts of town. And Doon is starting to find out things too.
