Carmen, Lena, Tibby, and Bridget are four close friends who share a pair of jeans in order to feel connectected to each other during the summer. There is a conflict with each of the four girls. Carmen is having troubles with her dad's new family, and with her mom's new boyfriend. Carmen's stepsister, Krista, ran away from home and came to Carmen for help.

Carmen's mom is dating this guy named David, and Carmen really hates him. She manages to break the two up, but realizes her big mistake. Lena just broke up with her boyfreind from Greece, and misses him dreadfully. Somehow, Kostos, her boyfriend, meets Lena back in the U.S, and they "do it" in the park. But then, Kostos mysteriously goes back to Greece, and its up to Lena to track him down.

Tibby heads off to Virginia for a film program. There, she has to make a biography film, so she makes a comic one of her mom. Unfortunatly, she makes her mom feel very sad, so Tibby has to make it up to her mom. Bridget flies to Alabama to see her grandmother, but in a disguise in order to find out about her dead mother. While there, she meets some of her old Alabama friends, boys she used to play with on a soccer team.

In The Second Summer of the Sisterhood, Bridget, Carmen, Tibby, and Lena embark on their second summer as The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Bridget heads off impulsivly to Alambama to face her problems, Tibby enrolls in a college flm-making program, Carmen stays at home and worries about her mother, who she thinks is going crazy over her boyfriend, and Lena looks death, betrayal,and love in the face in this page-turning novel.
