The 1999 revised edition of this book covers the history of the modern decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs, Persian and Babylonian cuneiform, Ugaritic, Cypriot, Hittite (Luvian), Linear B, Carian, and Maya glyphs. (The additions over the first edition are Carian, which is southwest Anatolian/Turkish, and Mayan of South America.) A great deal is packed into the 230 pages. The text is detailed and clear, there are many good photographs, tables, and illustrations. The author is a real historian, widely read, and distills his knowledge very readably, being suitable for the advanced general reader and up. Notes, glossary, bibliography, and index are provided. Maurice Pope is former professor of Classics at Cape Town and has published numerous academic articles and books.
