Thunder Book Summary and Study Guide

Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Thunder

Mala Bey, an up and coming jewelry designer, is on her way to Fort Lauderdale to show her jewelry to a guy who could make her career take off when she runs into a horrible, freaky storm. Rain is just pounding down in sheets and Mala is worried that she won't make it as she drives down Alligator Alley when she spots the motorcycle rider. Drenched and anonymous in his dark helmet, Mala is instantly attracted to the cocky motorcyclist who keeps circling her car. Spinning an elaborate fantasy about herself and the mysterious cyclist, Mala imagines him dominating her and bringing her to sexual pleasures like she has never known. Her fantasy abruptly ends when the motorcyclist skids on the rain-slicked pavement and slides into the Everglades, which seem to eat him up...

Mala frantically calls the police and has them search for hours, but no one can find any trace of him. She continues on to Fort Lauderdale, but is drawn back by a mysterious pull the next morning. She feels as if he is calling to her and begging her to help him. He also tells Mala that his name is Laird Jaeger. Mala tries to go in to the Everglades and help him, but, aside from toying with her sexually in a noncorporal form, she can't connect with him. As Mala becomes more and more obsessed with Laird and rescuing him, she tries to get Laird, or, as he now calls himself, Thunder, to leave his crazy dream of rejoining the Native Americans who lived in the 1800s and live his life in the present day. Even though Mala barely knows Laird/Thunder, she knows that she doesn't want to live without him - but he seems perfectly capable of living without her...
