While Blake and Melissa are fighting for their lives, Jennifer gives birth to two beautiful twin boys that their father Dennis rejects. Yet when he hears that Jennifer is quarantined and the twins taken care of by strangers, he returns to Baxter and using an alias manages to become their caretaker. When a shooter tries to hold Dennis and the twins as hostages, he foils the attempt and becomes a hero. As the medical crises lessens, the turmoil in Dennis' heart increases, forcing him to seek out help to discover what he really wants to do for Jennifer and his sons.

VITAL SIGNS is the story about a town in crisis and the people who in times of stress become heroes. The metamorphosis in Dennis is believable and beautiful to watch. Especially inspiring are doctors, nurses, and other support people risking their lives battling with a disease that might kill them. Kathy Herman brilliantly describes what makes people tick so that readers attain a terrific saga.
