The heroine Veralidaine ‘Daine' Sarrasri is an orphan who gets hired to assist transporting horses from Galla to the capital city Corus. During the journey she builds friendships and makes enemies with some monstrous Immortals (magical creatures). Throughout the book it becomes evident that her “knack with animals” is more than it seems. Numair Salmalin, the King's most powerful magician, takes Daine under his tutelage as a student so that she can develop her skills in Wild Magic, the magical ability to communicate and heal animals. Together, with the other famous Tortallans from ‘Song of the Lioness', they face their first battles with Immortals and neighboring adversaries that threaten the kingdom.

Daine has the ability to communicate with animals, but she's afraid of this ability because she lost control of it once and went crazy for a while. She meets a mage named Numair who helps her learn to better control her abilities. With the help of Numair and her friends, Daine slowly learns to trust people again. Her abilites become especially useful as more Immortals, creatures thought to have only existed in stories, are found throughout the human world.

Daine, the orphaned daughter of a hedgewitch is taken on a as a horse driver for her ability with animals as well as her ability with a crossbow. But when the party meets up with Numair, a great mage, he reveals that Daine is more than just good with animals. She has a wild magic that gives her control over the animals. He helps her to develop her skills to control her magic over the course of the journey. A great threat has risen to the land of Tortall as the mages of Carthak have awakened a host of mythical creatures from another realm and are using them to wage all out war on Tortall. Daine must put her new skills to use along with the skills of Numair and Alanna the champion female warrior of tortall to fend of this threat to their homeland.
