Blade Runner Message Board

Brent S. -UMD posts on 12/8/2008 12:44:43 AM I have never seen the movie Blade Runner before and although I'm not the biggest Science Fiction Buff, I certainly enjoy some Science Fiction movies. I really did enjoy this movie as I am a fan of Harrison Ford and I thought he played his character very well. It was really interesting to see how well he played this role as it is much different from some of his other famous films such as Indiana Jones and The Fugitive. Blade Runner is a very interesting film that introduces the idea of human-like clones that are fighting for their chance of survival and freedom. I wish the film would have gone into more detail about how the four replicants broke out, how they discovered that they were replicants, and how their environment differed from where the movie took place. I think it could have expanded on many different areas but it would have been longer obviously. That being said, I really did enjoy the film and it’s futuristic ideas about how the world could change. I thought the movie proposed an interesting idea; that clones could live among humans and nobody would ever really notice unless they were skilled in interviewing and observing them and knew what to look for. The ending of the movie was the most “enlightening” for me and I “felt” for Roy at the end of the movie. He tortured Harrison Ford’s character, Decker, and made him really know what it was like to be hunted at the end. I think Decker realized how unfair the clones situation was at the end I wonder if he would have continued his hunt for the replicants if he had experienced this before killing the others. I don’t think he would have as the movie ends with him leaving with Rachel. I also wondered if he, himself may have been a replicant but that he was so knowledgeable about them that he could have deterred anyone who suspected him of not being human. I wonder how his career as a “replicant retirer” began. I don’t think he would have been able to continue hunting replicants after his experience with Roy at the end even if he “didn’t have a choice.” The special effects were really good, in my opinion, for this movie being made in 1982. I couldn’t help but think a lot about the movie “I Robot” as they have similar ideas. Both films make the viewer think a lot about the “fairness” of creating something that can experience human-like feelings and emotions.
VOX posts on 12/6/2008 1:44:58 AM James Bliss's vision of the future exemplified in numerous Star Trek scripts never approached Phillip K. Dick's vision of the dreary, technology run amok future Blade Runner demonstrated. Why all the Asians? Please. You're kidding, right? It was a runniing theme in te nuumerous Dick short-stories: Asians were "implicitly" the majority,or the very least a non-minority. Society was chronically overmedicated, and the talking billboards were everywhere. This done in the late 70's, early 80's. So you have to cut the film some slack because Rocky Horror was a musical, and Star Trek was Utopian. How do you get Blade Runner by mixing that? Oh, right, you said BAD scripts.
Joe Drexler posts on 11/19/2008 12:59:50 PM I would have to agree with those who think this movie is out there. It was like watching a poorly done Star Track meets Rocky Horror Picture Show. The makeup, cinematography, and corny screen play added up to a weird and painful movie to watch. Also, I would like to say I agree that Deckard is a Replica. The origami and dream spell that out pretty clearly, I think. Also, I am not sure about this, but did anyone else notice how most of the people that where human on Earth were Asian? Does this imply that the Caucasian people in the film are the replicas? I don't know but that is what I was thinking.

Mark Bauch UMD posts on 11/7/2008 1:21:34 PM i have never seen Blade Runner and didn;t know what to expect. i heard it was a great film and after viewing it i agree. I like the concept of a clone type called a replicant who are hard to identify. i also thought is Deckard is himslef a replicant. i also think there is more to Rachael. i wonder if she is really related ti him or a ex lover. i know he tells her that she is based on the creators niece but that seems to ordinary how would he know how the creators niece is. the movie had a great plot and Roy was really bad ass replicant. Rutger Hauer had a great perfomance in this movie.
Brittany posts on 10/27/2008 12:48:07 PM Blade Runner was one of those movies that I was not expecting to be like it was. It was a bit hard to understand and I had to go back and rewatch a few parts. I was expecting many more replicants and not just four; the same thing goes for Decker. I was expecting many more just like him. I am not that into Science Fiction so it was hard for me to get into the movie. However, I was glad to see that there was more to the movie then just the killing of replicants. I thought the thought that went into the ending was great. I am the knid of movie watcher who would like all loose ends tied up, but Blade Runner left your imagination run. I did not mind this at all, in fact at this moment I am still wondering if Decker was a replicant or not. If people still hold this movie in such high regard today, that says a lot about Ridley Scott.
steph292 UMD posts on 10/26/2008 4:45:21 PM I also loved the movie despite my expectations. It brought forth some very thought provoking issue that I would have not given any thought otherwise. I however disagree with the last post about Deckard being a human. I think throughout the movie there are hints and even proof that he in fact a replicate especially toward the end. When Rachael asks him if he had ever taken the test he does not reply. And the unicorn that he finds at the end is a clear sign that the company knows what he is thinking and letting him know that he can not hide with Rachel if they run.
jorg0231 - UMD posts on 10/21/2008 2:01:09 PM As I sat down to watch this movie, I was expecting an action-packed tale with guns blazing, and replicants dying left and right. To my surprise, and pleasure there was much more to this story than random killings. To me the most important factor that this movie has to offer is a solid plot line which really makes you think about what we define as "human". There have been many ideas tossed around as to whether Deckard is in fact a replicant himself. In my personal opinion I believe that Deckard is a human and not a replicant, although this is a line that is beginning to be blurred near the end of the film. Overall I was very pleased with this film and will definitely be watching it again in order to try to get even more out of it than I did the first time.
Kroll074 - UMD posts on 10/12/2008 11:25:13 AM When the movie starts with the introduction of replicants, I am expecting Earth to have more battles to rid it of these dangerous creations. I was expecting more action than just one person chasing after four replicants. The fights came down to seconds; in where, Deckard seemingly “lucked out” in most cases. As this comment may sound like I did not enjoy the movie, that assumption is not true. I do understand how this became a “cult classic.” I was very much intrigued by the story and the execution of the movie; however, I was disappointed that it did not meet the expectations I had set for it from the introductory writings in the first scene. The movie did exceed my expectations in the messages and questions it created about our future.
Anonymous posts on 10/12/2008 3:05:05 AM I dont beleive it was ever expressly stated that Replicants were created to be superior to humans. They ARE however considered to be more EXPENDABLE than humans. And its simply impossible to engineer something that's infallible. So Replicants making mistakes that cost them is more than logical, its to be expected. "More human than human" was just a catchphrase. I can think of tons of man-made products that were nowhere near as impressive as their marketing made them out to be. Even if slightly better strength gave them an edge, it's still possible to lose to someone with a decided disadvantage. Victory isnt a guarantee even if the the deck IS stacked in your favor.
Kroll074 - UMD posts on 10/11/2008 6:59:23 PM With the introduction of Replicants in the opening of the movie, I was expecting them to be some amazing creations. I know that they are like humans in most ways; but, I thought they were created to be better in all ways than humans. I introduce the statement of Replicants being better than humans because I was disappointed by their portrayal. The four Replicants that take over the ship and sneak into Earth are stupid and easily defeated. Zhora takes minutes to detect and kill. Leon has strength, but does not have the brains to survive. Pris is agile, but too strange and not smart enough to survive. Roy is more advanced, and is set aside as being special, but he too, is no better than any human that he encounters. Each of these Replicants has brief encounters with Deckard. Deckard easily destroys Zhora and Pris. He lucks out that Rachel is around to kill Leon. He is also fortunate that Roy's life ends before he can harm Deckard. Deckard is set up as an amazing Blade Runner; his chief makes it sound like only he could defeat the Replicants. Deckard runs into multiple fights with the Replicants where he shows no amazing skills. He barely survives through most of his encounters; meaning there really is no extraordinary actions on his part. Throughout this movie, I was wondering if Deckard was also a Replicant. I was expecting it to be a twist that Dick or Ridley put in the book/movie ending. I expect it partly because he is set aside as being capable of detecting and killing Replicants. He also has the weakness for Rachel. For being someone whose job it is to rid the Earth of these copies; he warms up to Rachel fast. He is willing to risk a lot to keep her safe. I feel like this movie was more about the messages that underly the storyline, than the action. I think that I would like this story better as the novel, than as the movie version.
